Bonfires Light the Way

A Gentle Breeze

The sun lingers once more
With its golden tendrils
Shadows merge and rage
For the closing of day

In the turning of a page
Minds shift and wander
Words fall like tears
Floating in the distance

Thoughts become muffled
Muted by hesitation
Stifled by conceit
Lost in fright

Swaying in the silver mist
Dew drops collect in flight
Sighing with every breath
Pages whisper their consent

A gentle breeze blows
Long into the still night
Sweet music caresses
Nurtures and protects

Summer becomes autumn
The sun dims in the sky
Leaves fall and gather
As bonfires light the way

Running Out of Time

Faces and Places

Watching strange faces
Sitting in strange spaces
Longing to belong
Learning to sing their song

Searching for choices
Hearing many voices
With tears running rife
Pretending it’s real life

Living out of pace
Being in the wrong place
Feeling past my prime
And running out of time

Micro-Poetry

Below are several short poems or micro-poetry that I originally shared on Twitter.  Some changes have been made along with a few additions. Each piece was written on its own and are therefore unconnected, each can stand alone.

Darkness weeps from loneliness
The sound of silence frightens
Shadows linger and merge
Thoughts become manifest
As nightmares circle their prey

When sleep overtakes
In the dark desires awaken
Music played from youth
Melodies find memories

Searching for truth in beauty
Within the illusion of reality
Through a cracked looking glass
Reflected from past memories

Beauty framed with light
Thoughts hidden in shadows
In the mood of projection
As time stands still
Eyes searching evermore

Searching in the crowd
Hoping for understanding
Eyes pass me by
Seeing darkness all round
Looking for home
And someone just like you
Lost

Tuned to perfection
Fingers on silken strings
Caressing every cord
Sliding to and fro
Sweet harmony flows
As music cries forth

Thoughts whisper silently
Memories lost in darkness
Shrouded in shadows
Voices echo in the distance
Moments thunder with rage
Shattered by her tears

Haiku

Pent up energy
Searching for needed release
Time to take a nap

Compelling words heard
Excitement begins to flow
A lost phone number

Searching through the night
Shadows move into my dreams
Comfort in your arms

Grey clouds billowing
Smell of rain is in the air
Bright sun dries the lawn

My vision is blurred
Behind eyes emptiness aches
Forecast – high pollen

The thunder of truth
In my garden of delights
A shelter from storms

Whispering fronds sway
Under canopy of blue
A stillness descends

Standing on the shore
Waves echoing past
In another place

The candles are lit
Remembrance of the fallen
Their thoughts burning bright

When the lights are out
Shadows move in the silence
Made harmless by dreams

Lonely eyes cry out
Searching for a heart that’s lost
Tears mingle with rain

The Melody Lingers

Dreams and Autumn Years

Twilight dreams begin memories
Shadows dance in pale light
Leaves murmur in cool evening breeze
Melodies of lost time
Searching for words to sing again
Remembering the joy
Those youthful days of long ago
Where darkness never dawned

In the silence of the moment
My thoughts begin to stir
Past times echo at the edges
Those long lost summer days
Sharing hopes and dreams through the night
Living in the moment
Going wherever passions led
Exploring shared desires

Magical moments full of song
Joyous tunes meant for us
Never knowing that it would end
But heartfelt all the same
Shared melodies of innocence
For things we could not know
Present shared and futures unknown
Living in the moment

Twilight has moved with the shadows
The sun sets, moon rises
The chill of the night rouses me
Thoughts twinkle with the stars
High above and as deep inside
Forever there and bright
Darkness now lighted from the past
A guide through autumn years

No One Left by Our Side

A poem of the horrors and brutality of World War One…

Where Once Stood Men

Fledgling thoughts murmur in the distance
Whispering with rolling thunder and fear
Pouring rain, seen but rarely heard
Tears, mourning a future that will never be

Lights flash, tearing through darkness
Thoughts turn to wives and sweethearts
Gas clouds roll in, creeping over the land
Shells expose shadows as all run for cover

A red mist hangs where once stood a man
Bloody boots and feet are all that remain
Breathing in vapour, blood, bone and sinew
His life blood mingles with yours

Footsteps sink deep into mud and men
Shells explode all round, a deafening thunder
Comrades fall, their cries felt but never heard
Torn apart and scattered before your eyes

Nostrils fill with a sickly sweet stench
Of rotting flesh, gunpowder and smoke
Hovering in the air, clinging to skin and mind
A lingering memory that never fades

Alone in no man’s land, no one left by your side
Memories of a village dance steady shaking hands
Heart races as fear steers and adrenaline guides
Moving forward with nowhere to run, nowhere to hide

Flesh, blood and men trampled into mud
A heavy price paid for King and Country
From the dead and dying death collects his due
They will never to their scattered bodies go*

Blood soaked the earth and generations to come
Dreams lost, discarded or simply left behind
Down through the years the survivors followed
Until, like no man’s land, no one is left by our side

*Adapted from the line: “Of souls, and to your scattered bodies go” by John Donne in his Holy Sonnet VII: At The Round Earth’s Imagined Corners

Sweet Nectar

Shadows Linger

Wine flows over my tongue
Smooth, filling my senses
My eyes caress your body
As I savor sweet nectar

The warmth of your velvet skin
Touches mine as you pass me by
Your sweet scent fills my lungs
As I exhale with a mournful sigh

Your gentle voice captivates me
Longing to taste those moistened lips
To hold you close just one more time
As I dive into those deep blue eyes

Passions flare as soft music plays
Our bodies sway, moving in rhythm
Beauty burns bright in the dim light
As shadows linger and memory fades

Lost Time

Down Goldington Avenue

Fingers entwined with memories
Shivering in the cold and rain
On this dark winter’s eve
Waiting for you to take my hand
As I walk down Goldington Avenue

Once we lost time walking hand in hand
On those long hot summer nights
Losing my head with you by my side
Then summer turned to autumn
As the leaves began to fall

Sitting on our bench in the park
Huddling close from the cold
As the north winds whispered tales of snow
And when twilight faded with the setting sun
We made our way down Goldington Avenue

At home we sat by an open fire
Looking out as the rain turned to snow
Watching snowflakes melt as they fell
Your body close to mine, soft and warm
The taste of your lips linger still

What happens when love goes?
A falling star, burning bright then gone forever
Now a ghost running through my empty heart
Your footsteps echoing in the stillness
Haunting me down Goldington Avenue

Staring at the bottom of this glass
I sometimes think I can see you there
Looking up with your deep blue eyes
Never knowing I could feel this way
I order another double before closing

Chasing lost time I down my last drink
Pay my tab and head out into the night
With a shining moon floating by
And joyous memories to guide me
I wander down Goldington Avenue

It’s Her Disguise

Adrenaline Eyes

She spoke in a whisper, her name was Sophie
Voice so sweet, lips so moist
A gaze that excites from afar
Green eyes bright, shading your darkness

Adrenaline eyes
It’s her disguise
She’s got adrenaline eyes

She looked right by me as she went straight through me
She thinks she rules in her high heeled shoes
She’s got the look
She’s got it all
With her camouflaged disguise

Adrenaline eyes
It’s her disguise
She’s got adrenaline eyes

With a body made for pleasure
She knows how to pose

Adrenaline eyes
It’s her disguise
She’s got adrenaline eyes

“Hotel California” was playing in the background
She has such a lovely face, such a lovely face
Wearing satin and lace, a view so fine
Awakening desires in the dark corners of my mind

Adrenaline eyes
It’s her disguise
She’s got adrenaline eyes

Sophie you’re a long, long way from home
Come in from the darkness and the rain
Shed your mask, end your pain
Let wisdom, the light of your name, guide you

Adrenaline eyes
It’s her disguise
She’s got adrenaline eyes

So young, so fine, skin soft as wine
The intake of your breath, the rise of your breasts
A haze of temptation fills the air, with its heady scent
A smile so wide with rosie cheeks and dimpled blush
The sparkle in your eyes tells me, you need to be mine

Adrenaline eyes
It’s her disguise
She’s got adrenaline eyes

With a body made for pleasure
She knows how to pose

She looked right by me as she went straight through me
She thinks she rules in her high heeled shoes
She’s got the look
She’s got it all
With her camouflaged disguise

Adrenaline eyes
It’s her disguise
She’s got adrenaline eyes

“Hotel California” was playing in the background
She has such a lovely face, such a lovely face
She has such a lovely face, such a lovely face
She has such a lovely face, such a lovely face
She has such a lovely face, such a lovely face
